Dimensional (DIM) weight is the volume-based minimum every major carrier bills against: billable weight is the greater of the actual scale weight and length × width × height ÷ the carrier's divisor.

In 2026, FedEx and UPS daily rates divide cubic inches by 139 (UPS retail: 166), USPS divides by 166 but only above 1,728 in³, and DHL and Aramex divide cubic centimetres by 5,000 — so a 24 × 18 × 12 in box weighing 3 lb on the scale bills as 38 lb on FedEx and UPS daily rates (5,184 in³ ÷ 139, rounded up).

Why the divisor decides your bill

A smaller divisor makes the same box weigh more on paper: dividing cubic inches by 139 (FedEx/UPS daily) bills a heavier dimensional weight than dividing by 166 (UPS retail, USPS). DHL and Aramex use the metric 5,000 cm³/kg. The calculator surfaces every carrier's divisor so you can see which one is pricing your box on air.

How to pack a smaller billable weight

Right-size the carton and cut void fill — every extra inch of empty box is charged at the divisor. Since August 2025, FedEx and UPS round EACH dimension up to the whole inch first, so trimming a side from 12.2 to 12 inches is worth a full inch in the math. Densify the load and the dim-weight stops winning.

Why dimensional weight decides what you pay

Every major carrier prices parcels on billable weight: the greater of the actual scale weight and the dimensional (volumetric) weight. Dimensional weight punishes boxes that are big but light — a 24×18×12 in box of pillows weighs 3 lb on the scale, but FedEx and UPS daily rates bill it at 38 lb (5,184 cubic inches ÷ divisor 139, rounded up). If you ship anything bulkier than dense hardware, DIM weight — not the scale — is usually what you are paying for.

The five divisors at a glance

  • FedEx: inches³ ÷ 139 on all standard rates.
  • UPS: inches³ ÷ 139 on daily (account) rates, ÷ 166 on retail rates — the rate-type toggle above switches between them.
  • USPS: inches³ ÷ 166, but ONLY for packages over one cubic foot (1,728 in³), per USPS Notice 123. Smaller boxes are exempt from DIM pricing entirely — often the cheapest path for light, mid-size parcels. Heads up: from July 12, 2026 the USPS divisor drops to 139 (with per-dimension whole-inch rounding) — pick that date in the ruleset selector to model it.
  • DHL Express: centimetres³ ÷ 5,000 (the IATA volumetric standard).
  • Aramex: centimetres³ ÷ 5,000 on current rate cards, in line with the same IATA convention DHL applies.

Three rule changes worth knowing

From January 12, 2026, FedEx adds cubic-volume surcharges per its published Surcharge & Fee Changes 2026 (verified 2026-06-16): above 10,368 in³ an Additional Handling — Dimension fee applies with a 40 lb billable minimum, and above 17,280 in³ the package is billed as Oversize (90 lb billable minimum). The alerts panel flags both thresholds as you type.

From July 12, 2026, USPS changes its DIM divisor from 166 to 139 on competitive services (Priority Mail Express, Priority Mail, Ground Advantage, Parcel Select) and starts rounding each dimension up to the whole inch — still only above the 1,728 in³ threshold. What dimensional weight divisors do FedEx and UPS use in 2026?

FedEx uses divisor 139 on all standard US rates: dimensional weight = (length × width × height in inches) ÷ 139, each dimension rounded up to the whole inch first, the result rounded up to the next pound. UPS uses the same 139 on daily (account) rates, but the softer 166 on retail counter rates — the rate-type toggle in the calculator switches between them. You are always billed the greater of dimensional and actual weight. Divisors verified 2026-06-16 against FedEx's Surcharge & Fee Changes 2026 and the UPS 2026 rate guide.

Does USPS apply dimensional weight to every package?

No. USPS only applies dimensional-weight pricing to packages larger than one cubic foot (1,728 in³), per USPS Notice 123 (verified 2026-06-16). Below that volume you pay actual scale weight no matter how light the box is: an 11 × 9 × 6 in box is 594 in³, so it ships on its real 4 lb while FedEx and UPS daily rates would bill the same box at 5 lb dimensional. Above the threshold USPS divides cubic inches by 166 — but note that from July 12, 2026 that divisor drops to 139 and USPS begins rounding each dimension up to the whole inch, raising billable weight on large light parcels (verified 2026-06-16 against the Stamps.com 2026 USPS Rate and Service Changes summary). The 1,728 in³ exemption stays, and still makes USPS the cheapest pick for light, mid-size parcels.

What changed with FedEx and UPS dimension rounding in August 2025?

Since August 18, 2025, both carriers round each linear dimension up to the next whole inch BEFORE multiplying, instead of rounding the final result only. A 12.2 × 10.1 × 8.5 in box now computes as 13 × 11 × 9 = 1,287 in³ — 10 lb dimensional at divisor 139, where the pre-cutover math gave 8 lb. What are FedEx's 2026 cubic-volume surcharges?

Effective January 12, 2026, FedEx layers two volume-triggered surcharges on top of dimensional weight, per its Surcharge & Fee Changes 2026 document (verified 2026-06-09): packages over 10,368 in³ draw an Additional Handling – Dimension charge with a 40 lb minimum billable weight, and packages over 17,280 in³ are billed as Oversize (90 lb minimum billable weight). Only the higher tier applies when both thresholds are crossed, and the alerts panel above flags each one as you type your dimensions.

How do DHL and Aramex calculate volumetric weight?

Both follow the IATA volumetric convention: cubic centimetres divided by 5,000, compared against actual weight in kilograms, with the billable figure rounded up to the next 0.5 kg. An 18 × 14 × 10 in carton converts to about 41,295 cm³, giving 8.26 kg volumetric, billed as 8.5 kg. How can I reduce dimensional weight charges?

Shrink the box, starting with the longest side — dimensions multiply, so one inch off a single side often saves several billable pounds, and since the 2025 per-dimension round-up, trimming 12.2 in to 12 in is worth a full inch in the math. Watch the pack-density recommendation under the ledger: a density ratio below 0.5 means you are mostly shipping air. For boxes under 1,728 in³, USPS skips DIM entirely; without account discounts, UPS retail's divisor 166 also beats 139.
